When members of the St. Olaf Community conduct projects that involve collecting or analyzing data from human subjects, they incur legal and ethical obligations for respecting and protecting their project participants. The purpose of the St. Olaf College Institutional Review Board (IRB) is to assist St. Olaf employees and students in carrying out these obligations.

The mission of the IRB is to safeguard the rights and well-being of human subjects in projects conducted at or sponsored by St. Olaf College.

Institutional Review Board Responsibilities:

  1. Developing and disseminating federally-compliant policies for the protection of human subjects;
  2. Developing and implementing institutionally-appropriate procedures for the protection of human subjects;
  3. Educating members of the St. Olaf community about the protection of human subjects;
  4. Conducting reviews of generalizable research projects;
  5. Promoting professional development in research ethics.
