Indian Grass



Scientific Name:
Sorghastrum nutans

Other Common Names: Bushy bluestem, wood grass, wild oatgrass, yellow Indian grass

Characteristics: Indian grass is a warm season (C4) grass that typically grows between three and five feet in height. It is tolerant of drought conditions, and is one of the dominant grasses in tall grass prairie ecosystems along with Big Bluestem, Little Bluestem, and Switchgrass. The root system of Indian grass accounts for approximately two-thirds of the plant's total biomass and often reaches depths of seven feet.
