Residence Life

Fact: Ninety-six percent of students live on campus.
Opinion: That's what makes this a really exciting community.

You'll hear a lot of “C” words at St. Olaf: commitment, creativity, conversation, community. These are some of the hallmarks of a St. Olaf education. In terms of community, we're a residential college. We want people around. That's why we require that all full-time students reside in college-owned housing as far as accommodations permit.

Our co-ed halls house men and women on separate floors or corridors. First-year students live in one of five residence halls: Ellingson Hall , Hilleboe-Kittelsby Halls , Hoyme Hall , Kildahl Hall , and Mohn Hall . Sophomores, junior and seniors can choose from all residence halls and about a dozen Honor Houses, each organized around a community service theme or project.

For many first-year students, living sharing a room is a new experience. Whether your roommate is from halfway down the block or halfway around the world, you'll likely find that he or she is your first friend at St. Olaf, and often a best friend for life. We'll do everything we can to make sure you and your roommate are the best match possible.

Residence Life is much more complicated than simply assigning roommates. The Res Life staff – particularly your Junior Counselor (JC) – will coordinate floor meetings, organize activities, and help guide you through the challenges of adjusting to college life.
