Nikki Brock-Maruska '95, Pearland, TX

As a first-year student accustomed to the energy and diversity of urban living, Nikki discovered a different type of diversity at St. Olaf. She met students who came from a vast range of places, and whose social and political perspectives, and religious philosophies were different from her own. She was intrigued by the contrast in viewpoints, and an interest in broadcast journalism took hold. The speech/theater studies major went on to become a news reporter and anchor for the CBS news affiliate WDJT in Milwaukee.

Nikki participated in the Interim Urban Studies Program in Chicago and, like many Oles, her off-campus study experience was eye-opening. The program encouraged her to think on a higher level, as she was exposed to exceptional community leaders who committed their lives to the academic, social, and economic progress of Chicago. Nikki also served in the Student Government Association, was president of the Cultural Union for Black Expression, and vice president of Harambe.

As a member of the alumni board, Nikki will take on responsibilities similar to those she had as a student and explore ways to develop and grow a network among alumni of color. "In this fluid global economy," says Nikki, an independent media consultant in Houston, "I would like to help the board strengthen the bond and brand of the St. Olaf alumni as a desirable affiliation that lasts throughout our professional careers."
