Carol Schierenbeck Eisinger ’74, Wheaton, IL

  1. Please list your education beyond your St. Olaf degree?
M.A. University of Minnesota – Classical Archaeology
    M.A.L.S. Dominican University
  2. What is your current occupation?
Reference Librarian – College of DuPage – Glen Ellyn, IL.
  3. What was your major and how has that played out into your life today?
St. Olaf majors – German and Ancient Studies – I have taught courses in archaeology for elementary school students, and the research involved in getting both degrees led me to become a reference librarian and help others with their research.
  4. Tell us your favorite Ole memory.
My favorite Ole memory is “traying” down Thorson Hill.
  5. What is your favorite alumni event?
Christmas Fest – As a student I remember counting the number of alumni wearing Norwegian sweaters at Christmas Fest. Now my husband and I both have our own to wear!
  6. What do you consider your greatest achievement that St. Olaf has played a part in?
Because of our exposure to the ideas and opportunities that St. Olaf provided, I hope that my husband, David (’74), and I have instilled in our two children a curiosity about the world and its different cultures, and the desire to explore careers that can have a positive impact on both society and the natural world. This is truly the transformative power of a liberal arts education at St. Olaf College, and their generation will benefit from this experience.
  7. Why do you support St. Olaf College?
I could not have attended St. Olaf College without scholarships and the work-study program. My husband and I support the college because we want everyone to be able to attend, regardless of their financial situation. Also, our son and daughter are both Oles, and I see the many positive effects that the Partners program has on the lives of the current students. It is so important to continue the work of Partners to ensure that this support will continue.
  8. What do you hope to accomplish on the Alumni Board?
St. Olaf alumni, because of their varied occupations and worldwide volunteer work, are a tremendous resource for the students. As a parent of two Oles (Becky ’07 and Bob ’11), I hope the Board can develop ways to encourage alumni to network with new graduates as well as current students. For example, we plan many events in the Chicago area that alumni of any age can be involved in. We need to continue to provide these opportunities for all alumni.
  9. Any advice you have for current students?
If their schedules permit, they should get involved in a volunteer organization. It is a great experience! Also, they should network whenever they can. Meet alumni in their fields of interest, and talk to them about their careers. If they have the opportunity, they should spend an interim or a semester in an off-campus program. It can be a life-changing decision.
