"Living our Founders' Vision"
The Norwegian
immigrants who founded St. Olaf College on November 6, 1874,
believed that the open-ended learning of
a liberal arts education
would enable students to put the work
of everyday life into
a broader context and become leaders in
their communities.
At the dedication of the school, St. Olaf
President Thorbjorn
Mohn noted that young people "must
be instructed that they are not placed in the world for their
own
sake merely, but that every individual has a certain
office to
fill, a certain mission to perform, and although
his position in
life may seem insignificant in the life of
the world, it is
nevertheless necessary as a link in the
greater humanity."
As we celebrate the vision of the founders, it also is
fitting
to celebrate St. Olaf alumni who are living that
vision with remarkable lives of worth and service. Honoring
distinguished alumni on Founders Day reminds
us
that the
ideals of the founders live on through Oles around the globe.
