Men's Race Preview
TEAM
No. 8 Saint John’s of the MIAC is the favorite to win the men’s team title. The Johnnies won the MIAC’s, holding off second place No. 22 Carleton, with the champion and runner up. SJU final three scoring runners were 14th, 15th and 17th.
Nebraska Wesleyan, winners of the Great Plains, is ranked 16th in the latest national poll. The Prairie Wolves had their first four runners finish in the top 12, including the champion and runner up.
Luther and Wartburg of the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference should compete for the team title too. Luther had its top five finish 12th or better while Wartburg's best three were in the top six
at the IIAC's.
No. 34 Grinnell won the Midwest Conference title for the 11th season in a row in October and could compete for a top spot as well.
St. Scholastica of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference was second at its conference meet.
INDIVIDUALS
Chris Dunker of Nebraska Wesleyan, the defending Central Region champion and winner of last month's GPAC individual crown, is the favorite in the men’s race. Dunker's teammate Greg Timblin was second at the GPAC's, five seconds off the winning time.
Luther's Matthew Busche held off Loras' Ben Grant, Brian Chenoweth of Wartburg and teammate David McKay at the IIAC's to claim the individual championship last month. Any in the foursome could compete for the region title as less than four seconds separated the group in the conference meet.
The MIAC's best chance at an individual champion will likely come from its team champion - Saint John's. The Johnnies' Chris Erichsen win the conference meet by over 50 seconds in front of teammate Kelly Fermoyle.
Grinnell's win at the Midwest Conference meet was sparked by consistency. The Pioneers had their five scoring runners come in order from seventh-11th, led by Henry Reich.
