Comments from National Champions

Weight Class

Repeat National Champion Matt Shankey from Augsburg discusses his matches:
"That's what I came here to do. Everyone else is pretty good. I knew going in there I'd never wrestledhim. He's a pretty funky kid; I just had to stay with my stuff. As long as I stay with my offense I don't think anyone can beat me. I thought I wrestled real good. It feels real good to get the second title...a big weight off my shoulders."
Thoughts on his takedowns: "Thats my singleg (?) he knew my what my shot was and that's my best shot. I just keep going back to it. The more I do it the better I get and you just can't stop it; the same with in the semifinals. How does it feel to get individual and possibly team title? "Unbelievable, I've never been part of anything like this. I went to Apple Valley HS and we were real good there but this feels unbelievable and my teammates are the best teammates. I mean obviously all 10 of them are All-Americans. It feels real good. I mean the team title means as much to me as the title I just won. I mean if I won. if I do my part to win the tournment that's my contribution."

Two-time National Champ Mark Matzek of Augsburg:
Thoughts about back-to-back titles: "It's about the best years I've ever had. I almost want to say it's a relief but tomorrow it'll be even better after you achieve something like this and then our team. Last year we took second when we wanted to be national champions and now this year we wanna break the record. Team Chemistry: "Awesome every single JV guy has so much support and they push us everyday through practice. Did you do anything different today than yesterday? "I was overanalyzing myself the only reason. Today my philosophy is 'Just go wrestle'. I've been doing that you know 15 years probably and if I can wrestle with Shankey and Tidwell. There's no one who's going to be tougher than them."

National Champ Dustin Hinschberger of Wartburg discusses his match:
"I just focused on what I beat him with a the beginning of the year, Kinda had a plan, stuck to it, and the plan worked. On winning a 2nd National title "The first one is as hard as the second, it feels great, it's awesome, unbelievable."

Augsburg's three-time National Champion Marcus LeVesseur is flying high:
"It feels excellent, I'm loving every moment of it right now." Compared to the first two titles? "This one is a little more special because actually I'm going to win a team title to back up my own title so that's a great thing." Have you wrestled LeBeau before? "Actually I wrestled him last year at nationals in the quarts and I won that match as well." Strategy: "I just wanted to stay focused and keep control ... and that's what I did. I controlled every aspect of the match and I won a 6-0 match." More pressure? "there's more pressure but I want to keep it under control one match at a time as long as I keep doing that all the pressure in the world won't matter." Can you hear your mom while on the mat? "Actually, when I was little I did all the time but nowadays 'no'. All Ihear is Coach Swenson saying 'no, no, no' and 'yes, yes, yes.'" Thoughts on a team record: "We already got a record so the last record was 151 and we had 154 after the first two weights and so I'm loving it. This is my first chance to be part of a championship team and I'm soaking it all up right now." Going to relax now? "Oh, it's going to be so good; I can' wait."

Garret South, Luther (165): Feeling of national title "I don't know if it sunk in yet, its been a long time coming, I knew i had to wrestle hard. I didn't wrestle the match I wanted to in the finals but a win is a win in the National finals. " after getting second last year " Oh it's sweet revenge, last year just gave me a lot of fire, I wrestled awesome all year
this year and it's because of that loss last year."

174
Joe Moon, Augsburg (174): About almost not coming out this year " it's
true I just started about six weeks ago, I'm glad I came back, glad I'm not
sitting in the stands I can tell you that much. It's tough coming back,
it's tough defending a title coming back on short time like this, but I'm
glad I did it." about the finals match " He (Chris Healy) wrestled really
well, his style is tough for me, he stayed in good position the whole
match, he's a good wrestler, he deserved to be in the finals." about
winning individual title and team title
" Unbelievable, setting records,
or I believe we did as a team, but it's awesome, couldn't be happier.

184
Duane Bastress, York (184): First National Champion for York wrestling,
feeling of national title
" Great there is a strong tradition for York
wrestling and I just wanted to win a National title for coach." any extra
pressure
" I just went out like every other match, but I was definitly a
lot more nervous than I ever was before, it's awesome, it feels great."

197
Akeem Carter, Wartburg (197): "It feels great, two purposes I had,
actually three purposes to win this today, one was to glorify Gods name,
second my brother is in the Army and I wanted the news to get to him that
I'm a National Champion. third I wanted to represent Wartbug, and I think
I did all three of those today." comparing to first national title " Well
everytime I came into the finals so far, it was somebody big, and knowning
me I'm just quick, got the technique, and I adjusted that and I think I
got that today. I really achieved that today." about oppenent shooting a
lot in the first period
" Yeah he did! he had a style that i wasn't used
to. I mean it was good though, it was good to see a new style, new
technique and challenge me at the same time, challenging my style and see
how I come out."

285
Ryan Allen, UW-LaCrosse (285): " It feels awesome, actually knowing you
got all the hard work to pay off. Everything is good when it ends like
this ya know. Seven all-americans out of eight, it's phenomenal, and all
of us are coming back, including Jason Lulloff, so were excited for next
year." On familiar oppenent " I just look at what I do and hopefully I'm
doing the right stuff to win."
