McCarthy served on staff at Concordia in 1989. He then coached six seasons at the University of St. Thomas (’90-’94, ‘00), a span that included an MIAC Championship and a NCAA appearance in 1990. McCarthy moved on to serve as defensive coordinator for three seasons (‘95-97) at Northwestern College in St. Paul. Northwestern won a conference championship in 1995. He coached two seasons at UW-Eau Claire (’98-99), where the Blugolds won an WIAC Conference championship in 1998. It was there McCarthy earned a master’s degree. Prior to his time at St. Olaf, he was defensive coordinator during the 2001 season at Pensacola High School in Pensacola, Fla.
McCarthy and his wife Angie reside in Northfield with their three children: Zach, Emily and Addison.
