St. Thomas wins fourth consecutive team title;
Gusties Groff gets individual title
Northfield, Minn. (10/10/04) - St. Thomas continued their dominance
in women's golf this weekend at the MIAC Golf Championships at Willinger's
G.C. in Northfield, Minn. The Tommies took a two-stroke lead after
Saturday as they shot a 342 and followed that up by firing a 338
on Sunday to finish with 680 and win the championship by one-stroke
over Gustavus.
Gustavus (345-336--681) found themselves three back of the leader
St. Thomas and one back of Saint Benedict to start Sunday, but were
able to fend off the Blazers to earn a second-place finish.
Saint Benedict was unable to follow up a great Saturday (344) as
they shot a 355 on Sunday to earn a third-place finish. Following
the Blazers were Concordia (732), Carleton and St. Olaf (738), Saint
Mary's (754), Augsburg (777), and Macalester 779).
Gustavus junior Kelli Groff shot a 160 (80-80) to capture the individual
championship. Saint Benedict junior Kaley Kosak was the leader in
the clubhouse after Saturday as she fired a 77, but followed that
up with an 88 to finish in third place with a 165. St. Thomas junior
Maureen Hardwick 164 (83-81) finished second as she helped the Tommies
capture the team
championship.
Others in the top ten include St. Thomas senior Katie Glorvigen
(166), Macalester freshman Kristen Ausan (170), St. Thomas sophomore
Tricia Nelson (172), Gustavus junior Erin Schliep (174), Concordia
senior Katy Stevens (174), Gustavus senior Kelsey Getz (175), Saint
Benedict junior Megan Sand (175) and Saint Benedict freshman Heather
Fuchs (175).
