QUOTES FROM CHAMPIONS

  Long Jump (Men)
Greg Tyson , Heidelberg - 24' 8 1/2" (7.53m)
"I just finished basketball, but I was confident that I could come in and win this event. After the jump, I was confident that it was good enough to win... I have a goal of 26 feet and I plan on taking a week off and carrying this momentum to spring and hopefully win outdoor."

  Pole Vault (Men)
Nick Pergande, UW-LaCrosse - 16' 9 1/2" (5.12m)

Nick Pergande on his height of 16-9.5 said, "It's ok. I wanted to go a little higher."

From seventh place finisher, Alex Tapplin, "We had one vaulter just miss the cut for the national indoor and it would be pretty nice to have all five of us at the national outdoor. That's our major goal."

From second place finisher, Matt Novak, on their goal for this meet, "A national championship. This took some pressure off the rest of our guys. The team needed us to come through."

  Weight Throw (Men) Kevin Becker, UW-LaCrosse - 68' 3 3/4" (20.82m)

"It feels great to be a national champion. I had a couple struggles along the way. I had a little problem with consistency throughout the year. I put it together after the conference meet."

On a possible team championship "We are off to a great start. We are looking for a title again.”

For the outdoor season "I'm really excited about the outdoor season. I love throwing the hammer. It will be a great transition from my success here."

  Long Jump (Women) Melissa Harden, Illinois Wesleyan - 18' 8 1/2'' (5.70m)

On being a national champion "It doesn't feel real yet. This was a personal best by over 17 cm... This will give me more confidence on what can be done (in the outdoor season)... It was great that my family could come up and see me compete."

Harden's Coach, Chris Schumacher: "She came off an incredible conference meet. She set PRs (Personal Record) at that meet and came out here tonight and PRed by almost a foot to win the national championship as a senior. You can't write it any better than that... She put together a great series of jumps but it wasn't until the official read it that we knew it was one centimeter farther than the girl she was tied with."

Weight Throw (Women) Robyn Jarocki, Wisconsin Oshkosh - 68' 10" (20.98m)

Robyn Jarocki, UW-Oshkosh Women's Weight Throw Champion

"It (a national championship) is hard to win three times in a row. It was a really good competition for everybody. I was pretty happy with the performance. I was so close to getting 21 meters, but I didn't quite hit it at the end. I'm really looking forward to shot put tomorrow. I'm hoping to break that record."

Coach Pat Ebel: " I'm sure going to miss Robyn next season, since she is a senior. You don't get to coach many athletes like Robyn. We knew she was special from her freshman year on. I'm really going to miss her and senior Danielle Rankin (third place in the weight throw), they are special athletes."

  High Jump (Men) Andy Stoecken - 6' 11" (2.11m)

“It feels really good (to be a NCAA Champion). The last couple of years have I been waiting my turn. I had a really good feeling coming into this meet; I had a good meet last week. I kind of carried momentum into this week.”

On the crowd getting behind him on his last few jumps "It was an unbelievable feeling, you know they are all watching and cheering for you It was great.”

Coach Bob Schultz: "He (Andy) had a really good meet last week, at conference. He has been working really hard and peaking for this."

Pole Vault (Women) Stephanie Barnes, Wisconsin Eau Claire - 12' 7 1/2" (3.85m)

"It was a very tough field (of competitors)."

On the support of her friends and family in the crowd "It was great. My mom has never been to a national championship meet before."

Coach Doug Clary on Barnes' performance... "It was good to be back here and in this position. Any one of those competitors could have been sitting here today. It was just her day. Everyone came to play today but Stephanie came out on top."

  Triple Jump (Men) Tony Gregory, Cabrini - 47' 11 1/4" (11.98m)

"It still feels like I'm dreaming. The strength of our coaches and teammates carried me through this. Once I made it into the finals, I kind of wanted to relax, but my coach said, don't leave the door open. Once the third jumps came up I realized I won…I never thought this could happen."

Coach Brian Shells and James Williams

Shells - "I'm stunned. This wasn't even a thought. I knew he was kind of nervous but I told him he was here for a reason, last weekend wasn't a fluke….I just started working with him this season."

Williams - "Tony is just the easiest athlete to work with. He beat a strong field of athletes. He is our first national champion in school history. I'm very proud of him and all of our athletes…It feels good because he broke my school record."

Triple Jump (Women) Alecia Watson, City College of New York - 39' 3 3/4" (11.98m)

  High Jump (Women) Jennifer Harlow, Wheaton College - 5' 7 3/4" (1.72m)

"It feels good to be a champion. The competition was great."

  Shot Put (Men) Uzoma Orji, MIT - 55' 3 1/2" (17.77m)

"I had a rough last two weeks. The major problem was trying to force the throws too much. I had to focus on my technique more. It felt good today."

Coach Josh Bokel: "I knew he had him in it. It was kind of shaky after the first round. But I'm glad to see him do it."

Mile Run (Men) Will Leer, Pomona Pitzer - 4:09.42

"I was really nervous. I had a history of screwing up at the national level, three times so far in cross-country. I attribute to rest and sleeping at my house. I live in Minneapolis so it was just like being at home."

Coach Pat Mulcahy: "I thought he was capable of it, but until it happens you never know. Yesterday he was patient. Today there were some guys that tried to go and he was able to go with them. He had another gear. He used it and they didn't have it. It's probably the fastest, best race he has had in college."

Mile Run (Women) Marcia Taddy, Wisconsin Platteville - 4:55.90
"It feels really good. It's good to know you worked the whole season and it pays off in the end."

400 Meter Dash (Men) Nate Olson, Wisconsin La Crosse - 48.26

400 Meter Dash (Women) Rachel Anderson, Illinois Wesleyan - 56.35
"I feel amazing. I'm grateful for the great coaching that I had."

On her performance yesterday: "My performance was pretty dismal, but I knew because we worked so hard and had this good training, that I could do well."

Coach Chris Schumacher :"Rachel was able to run a perfect race by herself and that is what we were hoping was going to happen."

55 Meter Dash (Men) Anthony Miles, New Jersey City - 6.29
"It feels pretty good, especially being national champion last year. You have to defend your title and it's a lot of pressure. My two teammate, Ronald Hussey and Thomas Hunter, they motivate me."

55 Meter Dash (Women) Shanda Jackson, Lincoln University - 7.09
"My time was o.k. I wanted to do better seeing as I had a faster time in the trials."

Coach Victor Thomas: "She ran very well. The only question mark we had is that she came up too early. We stress to them to not panic. If anything goes wrong, stay straight and keep on going. That's what happened and that is why she came out with the victory."

800 Meter Run (Men) Jeff Zodda, College of New Jersey - 1:52.53
"It feels really good. It's been a long time coming. I'm a senior and I've been in track for four years... I knew I'd have to run really fast to get past the teams here. You always have to work for it. I just did my best."

5000 Meter Run (Men) Macharia Yuot, Widener University - 14:33.29

"It's really nice to be a champion. I came here (at the NCAA Indoor Meet) last year and won it, it was good to win for a second time…I can run faster than that, but I just ran with the pace. I was injured last year so this was different."

Shot Put (Women) Robyn Jarocki, Wisconsin Oshkosh - 55' 11 1/4''

"I had a huge P.R. and I shouldn't want to ask for anything more than that. I was hoping that I would have this kind of day today and I did everything I had to do to do that."

Coach Pat Ebel: "It was just translating from practice to the meet competition and she finally did that. I was extremely pleased to finally see that in a meet."

  DMR (Men)

Wisconsin La Crosse (Kevin Oelstrom, Eric Svestka, Andrew Boldt, Mike Herlihy) 10:05.24

Mike Herilhy - "It's kind of just surreal. I'm still a little in disbelief. It took a lot of pressure off of us because we knew we had the team title locked up before our race."
