Volleyball swept in first day of Northwestern Tourney

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The St. Olaf volleyball team opened the 2007 campaign with a pair of losses at the Northwestern College Tournament on Friday night.

Carleton College defeated the Oles 30-25, 30-27 and 30-24 in the first match. St. Olaf led 25-23 in game two before committing a combined four hitting and serving errors in the game's last nine points.

The Oles hit .048 in the first round loss.

In the nightcap, Saint Mary's of Nebraska defeated the Oles 30-25, 30-25 and 30-28.

Kim Smisek (Fy, Northfield, Minn.) had a team-best nine kills in the loss. Alyssa Williams (Soph., Northfield, Minn.) and Abby Fournier (Jr., Chanhassen, Minn./SW Christian) added 18 and 16 digs.

St. Olaf battled from a 10-2 deficit in game three and tied the game at 13-13.

The Oles will play Augsburg at 9 a.m. tomorrow.
