Women's hoops tops Augsburg in home opener

The St. Olaf women's basketball team fought off a second-half charge from Augsburg College, claiming a 65-58 victory Tuesday night at Skoglund Center.

The Auggies opened the second half with a 16-2 run to go up four, but St. Olaf held their ground and went up by four on a key three-pointer from Holly Grimsrud with 4:30 remaining (So., Zumbrota, Minn./ Zumbrota-Mazeppa) for the win in their first home game of the season.

The Oles rallied behind Christina Sampson's (So., North Branch, Minn.)double-double and clutch free throws from Grimsrud down the stretch to pull out the victory. Sampson finished with 11 points and ten rebounds.

Molly Simon (Sr., Hudson, Wis.) had a big game as well with 13 points and four assists with five rebounds.

The key stat in the game was St. Olaf's 78.3% performance from the freethrow line compared with Augsburg's 55.6%.

The victory marked St. Olaf's first victory of the season bringing their record to 1-1 (1-0 MIAC), Augsburg slides to 0-2 (0-1 MIAC).

The Oles play next on Saturday in St. Joseph, Minn. against Saint Ben's at 1 p.m.
