Volleyball raillies, but falls to Knights in five

NORTHFIELD, Minn. - Visiting St. Olaf erased a two-set deficit to force a fifth, but lost 15-9 in the finale to Carleton College on Saturday night in an MIAC volleyball match, the last of the regular season.

St. Olaf lost the first two sets, 25-17 and 25-20, but rebounded with 25-17 and 25-23 wins in the next two to set up the fifth.

Kim Smisek had a match-high 16 kills for the Oles (20-11, 6-5 MIAC), who will play at fourth-seeded Concordia in the first round of the MIAC Playoffs on Tuesday.

The Knights were led by Megan La Chapelle's 14 kills and 11 from Annie Eckhoff, while hitting .342 and .360.

Carleton (11-14, 5-6 MIAC) finished in a three-way tie for sixth but Saint Mary's won the tie-breaker and will move on to play the third seed, Saint Ben's, in the first round.

Regular season champ St. Thomas and runner up Gustavus earned first round byes.

Of the Oles' five conference losses, four came in five sets and the other, to champion St. Thomas, came in four.
