November 4, 2008
MOORHEAD, Minn. - The St. Olaf volleyball team defeated 15th-ranked and fourth-seeded Concordia College-Moorhead in five sets - 25-20, 25-22, 22-25, 23-25 and 15-7 - in the first round of the MIAC Playoffs on Tuesday night.
The Oles, who were led by Kim Smisek's 21 kills, will play in the semifinals on Thursday at regular season champion St. Thomas. The Tommies, ranked sixth in the latest AVCA national poll, had a first round bye.
Paige Olson added 12 kills for St. Olaf (21-11) while Concordia (20-5) was led by Jenna Green's 15.
The Oles were up 23-22 in the fourth set but Concordia scored the set's final three points, two on kills from Greta King, to force a fifth set.
The win mirrored the Oles' last trip to the MIAC playoffs, when the fifth-seeded St. Olaf team won at Concordia in the first round.
