Volleyball opens season with win at Gustavus

ST. PETER, Minn. - The St. Olaf volleyball team defeated host Gustavus Adolphus College in four sets -- 25-16, 25-18, 21-25 and 25-20 -- on Tuesday night to open the 2009 season.
Kim Smisek had a match-bests 12 kills and 15 digs and Kelly Prunty 35 set assists and a career-high 11 kills to pace the Oles, who won their season opener for the second straight time.
In the decisive fourth set, St. Olaf used a 5-0 run to take a 15-9 lead and never allowed the Gusties to get closer than three the rest of the way.
Alyssa Williams added 29 digs while first year attackers Melissa Burch and Katie Wolfram had nice debuts, collecting eight and seven kills in the victory.
Gustavus, which raced to a 14-4 lead in its game three win, was led by Olivia Warren's 12 kills and Jenny Ewert's 15 digs.
St. Olaf (1-0, 0-0 MIAC) hosts Northwestern College and Martin Luther College on Friday in the first of two days of the St. Olaf/Carleton Invitational at Skoglund Center. On Saturday the team plays Crown College and Buena Vista University at Carleton.
