MENOMONIE, Wis. - Viterbo College defeated the St. Olaf College volleyball team in four sets on Saturday morning, handing the Oles their first loss of 2009. St. Olaf then defeated Finlandia in three sets to close the day.
Viterbo (12-4) rallied from down 23-18 in the first set, scoring the final seven points to win 25-23. The Oles responded with a 25-22 victory in the second. The V Hawks, who had four in double digits for kills, then took a 10-1 lead in the third and cruised to 25-14 and 25-19 set victories to close the match.
Kim Smisek had a match-high 16 kills for the Oles.
St. Olaf coasted past Finlandia 25-11, 25-16 and 25-8 behind Smisek's 16 kills and 14 from Paige Olson. Olson's double-digit kill effort was the first for any St. Olaf player besides Smisek since the team's second match of the year (Katie Wolfram, 10, vs. Northwestern).
