Oles drop five-set match to No. 7 Wittenberg, swept by top-ranked Washington U.

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The 18th-ranked St. Olaf volleyball team lost a five-set match to No. 7 Wittenberg on Friday afternoon before dropping a three-set meeting with No. 1 Washington University in St. Louis in the first two rounds of Washington University/Asics National Invitational.
No. 7 Wittenberg def. No. 18 St. Olaf 25-15, 25-21, 23-25, 23-25, 15-11
The Oles' Kim Smisek had a match-best 16 kills, but Wittenberg scored six unanswered in the decisive fifth set on the way to the win.
St. Olaf led the final set 6-2 before Wittenberg went on its surge.
Kristin Boyum added 16 digs for St. Olaf while Katie Sumner's 10 kills paced Wittenberg.
No. 1 Wash U def. No. 18 St. Olaf 25-16, 25-17, 25-9
The top-ranked Bears had three players -- Meghan Byrne, Marya Kaminski and Lauren Budde -- with 10 kills on the way to the three-set victory.
St. Olaf was led by Ari Carlson and Smisek, who had eight kills apiece.
St. Olaf (4-2, 0-0 MIAC) plays No. 10 Carthage at 10 a.m. and No. 9 Ohio Northern at 12:30 p.m. tomorrow.
