Oles over No. 8 UW-Whitewater, host Simpson in first two rounds of Invitational

INDIANOLA, Iowa - The 15th-ranked St. Olaf volleyball team upended No. 8 UW-Whitewater in four sets (25-20, 17-25, 32-30, 25-23) before dropping host Simpson College in straight sets (25-20, 25-23, 28-26) in the first two rounds of the Simpson Invitational on Friday night.
The wins give St. Olaf (21-4) its third straight 20-win season and 13th under head coach Cindy Book.
No. 15 St. Olaf def. UW-Whitewater 3-1
Kim Smisek ahd 16 kills and 19 digs in the four-set victory. Ari Carlson and Katie Wolfram added 11 kills each as the Oles topped the second top 10 team of the season (No. 10 Carthage on Sept. 11).
St. Olaf, which never trailed in the 25-20 first set win, erased a 22-18 deficit in the third set and a 20-15 deficit in the decisive fourth to win the match. Smisek had each of the last two kills in the fourth set.
Kristin Boyum had 19 digs as well for the Oles, who have won four in a row and 16 of 17
UW-Whitewater had four players in double-digits for kills, but made 11 service errors to the Oles' two. Sofia Sanchez led the way with 15 while Katy Krjnak and Caitlin Hogan had 13 apiece and Shaela Hayden 11 in the loss.
UW-Whitewater's Christina DeGroot had 54 set assists while the Oles' Kelly Prunty had 42.
No. 15 St. Olaf def. Simpson 3-0
Smisek had 15 kills and hit .308 and Kirstee Rotty had 15 digs as the Oles topped host Simpson.
Simpson was led by Megan Dunlavy, who had 14 kills, and Taylor Helton's 16 digs.
St. Olaf plays Illinois Wesleyan and Wartburg College tomorrow to finish the event.
