Oles outlast Saint Ben's in five to stay in title hunt

NORTHFIELD, Minn. - The 12th-ranked St. Olaf volleyball team outlasted visiting Saint Benedict in five sets -- 15-25, 25-21, 25-20, 21-25, 15-9 -- in a MIAC volleyball match on Friday night at Skoglund Center.
Kim Smisek had 17 kills and hit .275 in the win for St. Olaf (24-4, 7-1 MIAC), which snapped a five-match Saint Ben's winning-streak in the series.
The Blazers (17-9, 6-3 MIAC) had four players in double digits for kills, led by Calleigh Brown's 14. Chelsie Sobieck had 13 while Kayli Schumacher had 12 and Lexi Alm 10.
The Oles raced to a 3-0 lead in the fifth set and, after Saint Ben's tied the set at 6-6, went on a 5-1 run in the middle of the set to all but seal the victory. The Oles hit .500 in the decisive set, which was paced by Smisek's five kills.
Saint Ben's cruised to a 25-15 win in the first set, as the Blazers limited St. Olaf to a .000 hitting percentage. St. Olaf responded with back-to-back wins, helped by strong finishes in each set. The Oles closed the second on a 4-0 run and the third on a 5-0 rally.
CSB's Kathryn Gaydos had 50 set assists while Kelly Prunty had 46 for St. Olaf.
The Oles have another tough MIAC test tomorrow afternoon with a 3 p.m. home match against Concordia College-Moorhead. The Cobbers picked up a five-set win at Gustavus on Friday.
