Women's soccer defeats St. Kates 2-1

ST. PAUL, Minn. - St. Olaf defeated St. Catherine University 2-1 in a MIAC women's soccer match on Saturday to stay in the hunt for a playoff spot.

Susie Jelinek scored the unassisted game-winner in overtime, at 92:00, as St. Olaf reached a school record-tying 12 wins for the third time in school history. The 2004 (12-6-1) and 1999 (12-6-0) squads were the others to accomplish the feat.

The Oles, who outshot SCU (6-9-1, 2-7-0) 19-6, used Ellie Stiener's goal in the 16th minute to take a 1-0 lead. St. Kate's evened the score when Katie Eckman scored a goal off a free kick at 20:52.

Ellie Steiner had four shots for St. Olaf, while St. Kate's Kayla Engel had two.

St. Olaf (12-4-0, 6-3-0) is one of four teams, with three losses in league play, fighting for the final two spots in the four-team MIAC playoffs.

The Oles host Bethel University on Wednesday at Rolf Mellby Field at 3:30 p.m.
