Pipers pull away from Ole women for MIAC win

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Hamline University defeated visiting St. Olaf 83-76 in a MIAC women's basketball game on Wednesday at Hutton Arena.
Kara Poirier had 17 of her game-best 21 points in the first half as the Pipers (4-8, 3-6 MIAC) led 40-29 at the break on the way to their third straight victory.
St. Olaf first year post Elise Raney had 15 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks. Kirstee Rotty added 17 and Eileen O'Donoghue 12 points in the loss. Mackenzie Wolter chipped in 11 points and had a season-best eight assists.
HU had a 13-point lead midway through the first half before St. Olaf closed within seven. Poirer then hit a pair of free throws with five seconds left and the Pipers converted a steal and basket as time expired for the double-digit lead at the break.
St. Olaf (7-5, 4-5 MIAC) used a pair of bursts to get within striking distance in the second half. The Oles had the HU lead to two on two occasions, but Nikki Klinck hit the first two of three straight three-pointers that gave Hamline a comfortable lead.
Klinck finished with 17 points and Mary Wilkowski 15 and seven rebounds in the win.
