Ole men hold slim lead at MIAC's through second day

MINNEAPOLIS - St. Olaf had two individual wins and a victory in the 800 Free Relay on Friday night to hold its lead through the second of three days at the MIAC Swimming and Diving Championships at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.

St. Olaf has 487.5 points through Friday, while second place St. Thomas has 423 and Gustavus 404.

The Oles' 800 Free Relay team of Chris Bateman, Kyle Biesecker, Chase Liaboe and Spencer Scarth finished the night with a three-plus second win over second place Carleton.

Bateman won his second event of the championship with his dominating victory in the 400 IM in a NCAA A cut time (3:57.21), which was over seven seconds faster than runner up teammate Scarth. Scarth's 4:04.67 is a B cut. Ole sophomore Eric Carlson was fourth and Galen Magnuson seventh in the event.

First year Colby Kubat won the 100 Breast with a strong NCAA B cut 56.34. Kubat was one of three Ole first years in the top six in the event -- with Phillip Maple (third) and Taylor Kutchen (sixth).

The Oles' Jacob Reinhart and Luke Money finished second and third in the 100 Fly.

Luke Murrell, Kubat, Luke Money and Biesecker teamed for a second place finish in the 200 Medley Relay with a NCAA B cut time (1:33.53).

Biesecker was sixth in the 200 Free.
