ST. JOSEPH, Minn.- The St. Olaf men's tennis team won their third conference match in a row by defeating Saint John's University 6-3 Saturday afternoon in St. Joseph.
The Oles swept the three doubles matches, which turned out to be pivotal. Winning for the Oles were the teams of Knute Gundersen and Will Mitchell, John Wight and Andy Catania, and Charlie Reinertsen and Ryan Abdella. The win brought Gundersen and Mitchell's record at first doubles to 7-3 on the year while Wight and Catania improved to 5-1 at the second position. Wight recovered well from dropping the first set to win the second 6-0 before winning a close super tie-breaker. Foss won his first set in a tie-breaker despite being down four games to none and went on to win in straight sets. Catania won his match in two close sets.
After losing the first set, Gundersen rallied to win the second but came up on short in the super tie-breaker. Reinertsen won his first set 7-5 before ultimately falling in a super tie-breaker. Mitchell split his first two sets before being edged out in yet another super tie-breaker 11-9.
