LA CROSSE, Wis.- The St. Olaf men's tennis team ended UW-La Crosse's winning streak at 13 matches and extended their own winning streak to four with a 6-3 win at Veterans Memorial Tennis Courts on Tuesday afternoon.
In what turned out to be a highly competitive match, the Oles won two of the three doubles matches to start the afternoon. John Wight and Andy Catania won a close match at second doubles while Ryan Abdella and Charlie Reinertsen won the last six games of their match after trailing 6-2. Knute Gundersen and Will Mitchell suffered a narrow defeat at first doubles.
In singles play, the Oles got wins from Wight, Reinertsen, John Foss, and Mitchell to clinch the win. Wight won comfortably in straight sets at second singles while Reinertsen won in two close sets at third singles. The closest match of the afternoon was Foss's match at fourth singles. After winning the first set, Foss lost the second set in a tie-breaker before winning a lengthy super tie-breaker 13-11. Mitchell won his match at sixth singles in straight sets. Gundersen and Catania suffered straight set defeats at first and fourth singles.
St. Olaf returns home on Saturday for a match against Luther before hosting Carleton on Wednesday afternoon.
