Hughes shuts down Pipers in game one, Hamline gains split in second half

NORTHFIELD, Minn. - Ben Hughes struck out 11 in a two-hit shutout as St. Olaf topped Hamline in the opener 8-0, before the visiting Pipers picked up a 5-2 win in game two of a MIAC baseball doubleheader on Sunday at Mark Almli Field.
St. Olaf 8, Hamline 0 Hughes walked only one and faced two over the minimum. He allowed only one Hamline hitter to reach second base in the win, his fifth (5-0) of the year.
The Oles scored three in the first two innings and sealed the win with a four-run sixth. Nick Kulla delivered an RBI-single in the first and a two-run single in the sixth as a part of a 3-for-4 game for the Oles. Jack Schechinger was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs and Sam Maus 2-for-3 for St. Olaf.
Game Two: Hamline 5, St. Olaf 2 (8 Inn.) Hamline scored three times in the top of the eighth to defeat the Oles in the nightcap.
St. Olaf used a two-out Sean Dube single in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game.
The Pipers had three hits in the eighth, including an RBI double by J.D. Modrynski and a run-scoring single by Ryan Hackel. Hackel (2-for-4), Ben Richardson (2-for-3) and Jordan Buck (2-for-2) each had two hits in the win.
Kulla had two hits to pace St. Olaf.
