Oles hold off Luther, 24-22
September 3, 2011
NORTHFIELD, Minn. - Leon Clark rushed for 137 yards on 31 carries with a touchdown, and the host Oles stopped a Luther two-point conversion with 3:11 left to preserve a 24-22 non-conference football win on Saturday at Manitou Field.
With the win, St. Olaf (1-0) has won its last 15 non-conference games, including seven against the Norse (0-1). The victory didn't come easy for the Oles, who gave up a kick return for a touchdown, were stopped inside the Norse 1-yard line, surrendered a safety and trailed until late in the third quarter.
Clark, who also caught a pair of Dan Dobson passes, scored a touchdown on his first touch, a 33-yard run that tied the game at 7-7 midway through the first quarter.
Luther's Don Porter took the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown to give the Norse a lead they'd hold until late in the second half.
Trailing 16-10 in the third quarter, St. Olaf used a Dan Dobson keeper from seven yards out to take the lead, 17-16. Dobson later connected with Steven Asp on a 55-yard scoring throw that made it 24-16 with 11:37 to play.
Luther's Chris Reynolds scored on a 28 yard touchdown scramble, setting up the potential game-tying conversion. Reynolds rolled to his right, tried to run it in but was stopped at the one-yard line.
The Oles defense was paced by Wes Lynch, who was in on 14 tackles, and Brian Albrecht. Albrecht recovered a fumble, intercepted a pass and had five tackles, including 1.5 for a loss.
