Volleyball sweeps Knox, falls to 24th-ranked Wartburg

WAVERLY, Iowa - The No. 21 St. Olaf volleyball team cruised past Knox College in straight sets on Friday afternoon before falling to No. 24 and host Wartburg College in the nightcap in the first two rounds of the Wartburg Invitational.
St. Olaf hit .422 as a team in the 25-14, 25-9 and 25-18 victory over Knox in the opener. Ari Carlson had 10 kills and Katie Wolfram nine for the Oles in the win.
Wartburg (6-0) raced to a 6-1 lead in the opening set and defeated St. Olaf 25-15 in the first. The Oles were within a point late in the second set, at 20-19, before the Knights scored four straight.
In the decisive third set the Oles trailed by as many as six, before a 5-0 rally gave St. Olaf a 24-23 advantage. Wartburg then used two attack errors by the Oles and a kill from Kelly Niemann to secure the set and match.
Niemann had eight kills while Britlyn Sieck had a team-best 13, while hitting .400, for Wartburg.
Carlson had 10 and Wolfram nine for St. Olaf in the loss.
St. Olaf finishes the event with matches against MIAC foe Concordia College-Moorhead and Nebraska Wesleyan tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
