Football holds off Simpson

INDIANOLA, Iowa - Dan Dobson threw for 309 yards and three touchdowns as St. Olaf held off Simpson College for a 31-23 non-conference football win on Saturday afternoon at Buxton Stadium.
St. Olaf has now won 17 straight non-conference games.
The Oles (2-0, 0-0 MIAC) trailed 7-0 into the late stages of the second quarter before rallying for 24 unanswered points, including 14 inside the final three-plus minutes of the first half. Dobson found Jake Schmiesing for a 21-yard touchdown with 3:31 left in the half and then capped a six-play, 77-yard drive with a 10-yard throw to Keith Nederhoed with 28 seconds left.
Dobson's final touchdown throw came on a 9-yard strike to Stephen Asp midway through the fourth quarter to give St. Olaf a 31-13 lead. The score became decisive, as Simpson rallied for 16 fourth quarter points to make it interesting. Asp had a team-best seven receptions for 147 yards.
The Storm (0-2) had a 320-yard passing day from Taylor Nelson, who completed 28-of-46 attempts. His favorite target was Mike Kuhn, who had nine catches for 130 yards.
Michael Thai rushed for 55 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries for the Oles, who lost starting running back Leon Clark to an injury in the first half.
Michael Chia rushed 17 times for 74 yards and two scores for Simpson in the loss.
St. Olaf travels to St. Paul for its MIAC opener with the University of St. Thomas next Saturday at 1:10 p.m.
