Howard breaks school scoring record as Oles top St. Catherine
September 24, 2011
NORTHFIELD, Minn.- Senior forward Lindsay Howard broke the school record for goals in a career with her 35th goal in a St. Olaf jersey as the Oles beat St. Catherine 4-0 Saturday morning at Rolf Mellby Field.
With the Oles already ahead 3-0, Howard headed home a corner kick by Anna Theis at the 77:41 mark to break the record previously held by Kelsey Watt. Just moments before, Howard was in one-on-one with Wildcats goalie Abbey Hinton but Hinton came up with a big save to temporarily deny Howard her 35th career goal.
St. Olaf took command of the game by scoring two goals in the first five minutes and never looked back.
Just a minute and a half into the contest, Deanne Schmidt scored her second goal of the year to give the Oles a very early lead. Schmidt hit a right-footed shot from outside the box that nestled in the lower-right corner.
At the three minute mark, the Oles doubled their lead when Amanda Leone's shot hit the left post and Catie Christoffel tucked the rebound into the open goal. The goal was the second of the year for the senior forward.
St. Olaf's third goal came courtesy of Annie Manning's first goal of the fall. Manning controlled a loose ball a few yards outside of the box and rifled a left-footed shot across the goal and into the lower-left corner.
The Oles outshot St. Catherine 15-5 for the game and held an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks but were caught offsides nine times. Howard led St. Olaf with three shots on goal, while Kristi Thorwick had the only two shots on target for the Wildcats.
The win moves St. Olaf to 7-0-1, 3-0-0 in the MIAC, while St. Catherine falls to 1-8-0, 0-3-0. The Oles host Hamline on Tuesday afternoon at 4.
