Volling shares title, Ole men fourth at MIAC's

COON RAPIDS, Minn. - Justin Volling shot a final-round 74 to share the individual conference title to lead the St. Olaf men's golf to a fourth place finish in a tightly contested MIAC Championships on Monday.
Volling played the back nine a remarkable three-under par, after firing a 41 on the front. He made four birdies on the back, including three in the final five holes to share the event title with Alex Kapraun of the University of St. Thomas, who carried a five-stroke lead after the 13th hole.
Kapraun made par on 14 and 15 before back-to-back bogies to open the door for Volling who made a birdies on 14, 16 to get within a stroke onto the 18th tee box. Volling made birdie while Kapraun made par on the 390-yard par four as the duo shared the title.
The Oles had two others in the top 20 -- Ryan Heide (76-77-76, 229, +13 - 12th place) and Ryan Lubinsky (74-75-82, 231 +15 - 19th) -- while J.R. Shimpach was 21st.
St. Olaf was within 11 strokes of champion St. Thomas (+33), which won the event for the first time in school history. Gustavus was four strokes back and Saint John's five in third.
