10th-ranked Wartburg hands Ole women's soccer first defeat of fall

WAVERLY, Iowa- No. 22 St. Olaf suffered its first defeat of 2011 at the hands of No. 10 and host Wartburg 2-1 Wednesday night in a non-conference women's soccer game.

The Knights (9-1-1), who came back from an early deficit, and Oles (8-1-2) entered the game as the first- and second-ranked teams in the North Region.

St. Olaf got off to a perfect start, as they took the lead less than two minutes into the contest. Forward Lindsay Howard scored unassisted for her eighth goal of the fall.

The Knights' Katy Wendt scored her fourth goal of the fall at the 41:38 mark to erase the Oles advantage and tie the game at 1-1.

It did not take Wartburg long to take the lead in the second half. Chelsea Frye scored her team-leading 10th goal at 45:57, which turned out to be the game-winner.

The Oles outshot the Knights 15-12, including 10-4 in the second half but came up short on the scoreboard. Howard led St. Olaf with four shots while Anna Theis and Annie Manning each had two shots on goal.

Wartburg was led by goalscorers Frye and Wendt, who each had three shots. Knights goalie Monica Noti made six saves to earn her eighth win of the year. Nora Forbes made six saves for the Oles.

St. Olaf looks to return to the win column on Saturday when they travel to St. Paul, Minn., to take on the University of St. Thomas. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. The Tommies are off to a 3-1-1 start in MIAC play and are 5-3-1 overall.
