NORTHFIELD, Minn.- Senior forward Lindsay Howard's early goal on senior day was the only goal of the game as the St. Olaf women's soccer team topped Macalester 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field.

Howard scored six and a half minutes into the game following a free-kick deep in the Oles half. With a strong wind at her back, defender Susie Jelinek launched the ball forward and Howard controlled the ball to her feet before poking it past Scots goalie Rosie Glenn-Finer and into the net. The goal was her team-leading ninth of the year and the assist was Jelinek's third.

Overall, the contest between two teams in contention for the MIAC regular season title was even. The Oles held a 12-8 advantage in shots, including a 6-3 edge in shots on target. Deanne Schmidt, Amanda Leone, and Emma Crumley each had two shots for St. Olaf, while Bonnie Gale led Macalester with three shots.

Sophomore goalie Nora Forbes made three saves in net for the Oles on the way to posting her seventh shutout of the year. Glenn-Finer made five saves for the Scots but took the loss.

Before the game, the Oles honored the teams' eight seniors. The win was the perfect result for the team in the last home game for Howard, Deanne Schmidt, Andrea Fossum, Christina Herron-Sweet, Hannah Rosenthal, Callie Knaeble, Allyson Connor, and Catie Christoffel.

For the time being, St. Olaf is atop the MIAC standings with a record of 9-2-3, 5-1-2 in conference play. With 17 points, the Oles are just one point ahead of St. Ben's and Carleton. Macalester (8-6-1, 4-3-1) is currently sixth on 13 points.

St. Olaf travels to Moorhead on Tuesday for a game against Concordia College. The Cobbers have a record of 8-1-3, 4-1-2 in MIAC play.
