MINNEAPOLIS - No. 24 St. Olaf stopped Augsburg on a fourth quarter drive inside its own 5-yard line as the visiting Oles outlasted the Auggies 24-20 in a MIAC football game on Saturday afternoon at Edor Nelson Field.
St. Olaf (6-1, 4-1 MIAC) took the lead on a 32-yard scoring run by quarterback Dan Dobson with 9:20 left in the game. The teams then traded stops before Augsburg regained possession and drove the ball inside the Oles' 5-yard line where it was first-and-goal from the 4-yard line.
The Ole defense then stopped the Auggies, on two tackles for a loss and two incomplete passes, to take over on downs with 2:33 left.
St. Olaf then picked up a pair of first downs and kneeled down to victory.
Leon Clark led the Ole offense with 99 yards rushing and a score on 21 carries and six receptions for 76 yards. Dobson finished 18-of-25 for 231 yards and a touchdown, with one interception.
Augsburg was led by Tyler Maxwell's 162 rushing yards and Marcus Brumm, who threw for 234 yards on 26-of-44 through the air. The Auggies were plagued by a pair of special teams mistakes. They were stopped on a fake field goal attempt, missed another and missed an extra point.
The Auggies ran 87 plays for 460 yards, while St. Olaf had a 57 for 381 yards.
St. Olaf hosts Hamline University (0-7, 0-5 MIAC) next Saturday while Augsburg hosts Macalester in a non-league game.
