WAVERLY, Iowa - The St. Olaf women's cross country team finished third in the 27-team NCAA Division III Central Regional on Saturday.
Senior Maren Westby, who placed fifth in 22:09, and junior Emma Lee, who placed sixth in 22:13, qualified to race at the NCAA Div. III National Championships next Saturday in Oshkosh, Wis.
Westby and Lee were named to the All-Region team, as were teammates Christine Muller (18th, 22:42) and Rachel Dean (27th, 23:01). Lauren Carlson (37th, 23:24) was the Oles' fifth runner. St. Olaf's sixth and seventh runners, Becca Bevans (40th, 23:31) and Hannah Dennis (49th, 23:37), finished in the top 50 among 188 runners.
St. Olaf came in third with 93 points. Wartburg College won on their home course with 63 points and Carleton College, this year's MIAC champions, grabbed second with 85.
Wartburg and Carleton automatically qualified to compete at the Div. III National Championships. St. Olaf waits until Sunday afternoon for the release of the at-large teams selected to compete in the meet.
In 2010 two teams from the Central Region, including fourth place St. Olaf, joined the automatic qualifiers.
