November 18, 2011
NORTHFIELD, Minn.- Jeff Harris scored twice and twin brother Kevin added a goal as the St. Olaf men's hockey team defeated Hamline 4-0 Friday night at Northfield Ice Arena.
St. Olaf took a 1-0 lead at the 7:28 mark of the first period on senior Britton Smith's first goal of the year. The game's opening goal was assisted by Derek Grogan and was an even strength goal.
After Smith's goal, the Harris twins stole the show. Kevin Harris doubled the Oles lead four minutes after Smith's tally, with his first goal of the season off an assist from Ross Trousdale.
A little less than three minutes into the second period, Jeff Harris extended St. Olaf's lead to 3-0 with the first of his two goals on the night. His second goal of the year was assisted by Bryan Glynn and Justin Thomas. With 30 seconds remaining, Harris finished the scoring with an empty-net goal.
Despite the 4-0 scoreline, the Pipers outshot the Oles by a slender 26-25 margin. After being outshot in the first two periods 20-14, St. Olaf flipped the switch and held a 11-6 edge in the third. Hamline goalie Beau Christian made 21 saves, while Ben Leis kept the Pipers off the scoreboard by making 26 saves of his own. Hamline (4-3-0, 2-1-0 MIAC) had five power-play chances to St. Olaf's one but could not capitalize on the man advantage.
With the win, the Oles improve to 4-1-2, 2-0-1 MIAC. The team heads to Vadnais Heights on Saturday night to play the Pipers in the second game of the weekend series.
