CLAREMONT, Calif. - Claremont-Mudd-Scripps shot 67.9 percent from the field in the first half, going 19-for-28 on the way to an 82-74 men's basketball victory over St. Olaf on Friday night at Pomona-Pitzer's Voelkel Gymnasium in the first round of the David Wells Classic.
St. Olaf (1-2) was paced by Stu Neville and Bobby Fong, who had 17 points each, while Connor Gunderson added 16 in defeat. Five were in double figures for CMS (4-0), led by Cody Mivshek's 16 off the bench.
CMS led by as many as 20 in the first half, before the Oles came storming back. St. Olaf went on a 14-0 run in the opening minutes of the second to get within two, at 48-46 with 13:58 to play. The game then see-sawed for the next nine-plus minutes before the Oles tied the game on a Gunderson layup with 4:40 to play. After the teams traded buckets, CMS scored the next six points and never turned back, making 8-of-12 from the line in the final minute.
St. Olaf had 22 assists against a mere 13 turnovers, but made only 11 of 22 at the charity stripe in the loss.
The Oles complete their two-game set in Southern California with a game against Pomona-Pitzer tomorrow at 9 p.m. CST.
