SMSU outlasts Oles 32-9

MARSHALL, Minn. ? The St. Olaf wrestling team lost a 32-9 decision to Division II Southwest Minnesota State University on Wednesday night.

In the first match of the night, freshman Wesley Azariah was behind 11-7 before being pinned with only twelve seconds left in the match. SMSU extended its lead to 9-0 after Ian Peppel lost a close 9-5 decision to SMSU captain Justin Reinsma.

The Oles picked up their first win at 141 courtesy of senior captain Ryan Timmerman, who picked up a 4-1 decision over his high school rival Ethan Hildebrandt. At 149, Tom Mork put together a strong third period, but ultimately lost 12-9, giving the Mustangs a 12-3 lead in the match.

In the 157-pound bout, junior Jake Bohler earned an 11-5 decision over Blaine Miller, cutting SMSU?s lead to 12-6. Collin Jergensen held the Mustangs' captain Jake Begin to a major decision, losing 13-0.

James Roach picked up the Oles? final win at 174 with a 7-4 decision over Trent Molacek, bringing St. Olaf to within seven points of SMSU, but the Mustangs picked up three more wins to put the match out of reach.

Andrew Rudd, looking for the pin, had a successful throw in the first period but lost 13-5 to Micah Larson. Elliott Courchaine, wrestling up two weight classes, wrestled tough but was pinned at 4:28, and senior James Noneman was pinned with twelve seconds left by heavyweight Todd Klemz.
