Ole women defeat Saint Mary's in MIAC opener, move to 4-0

WINONA, Minn.- The St. Olaf women's basketball team outscored Saint Mary's 16-4 in the last five minutes of a 76-64 win over the Cardinals in the Oles MIAC opener Saturday afternoon at the SMU Gym.

With 5:21 to play, the teams were deadlocked at 60-60 but St. Olaf scored 16 of the final 20 points of the game to extend their undefeated start to the season to four games. Down the stretch, the Oles knocked down 11 of 12 free throws to seal the win.

Saint Mary's got off to the better start in the first half, as they took a 34-31 lead into the break. St. Olaf shot just 35.5% in the first half, while the Cardinals shot 42.9%. Neither team led by more than five points in the first half.

After halftime, the Oles shot a blistering 56.5% from the field and made 15-18 free throws to pull away from Saint Mary's. Mackenzie Wolter made seven of eight from the line in the final 77 seconds of the game.

Wolter led the Oles with a game-high 19 points on 5-12 shooting from the field and also added five rebounds and five assists. Eileen O'Donoghue scored a season-high 15, making three three-pointers and also pitched in with seven boards. Nikki Frogner was the third Ole in double figures, coming off the bench to score 13 points.

The Cardinals had a balanced attack offensively, also having three players in double figures. Jamie Stefely had 12 points and eight rebounds, while Kaitlyn Keefe and Octavia Brown each scored 10.

The Oles improve to 4-0 on the year after winning their first MIAC contest. Saint Mary's falls to a record of 1-2, 1-1 in conference play. St. Olaf returns to action on Monday when Macalester pays a visit to the Skoglund Center for a 5:30 pm tipoff.
