Men's tennis shuts out Concordia-Moorhead in first spring match
February 13, 2012
FARGO, N.D.- The St. Olaf men's tennis team began their spring season with a 6-0 victory over Concordia-Moorhead on Saturday afternoon. Three matches did not factor into the final score because the outcome was already decided.
Although the women were playing at the same time, the men opened, as usual, with doubles play. St. Olaf swept the three doubles matches behind wins from John Wight and Andy Catania, Knute Gunderson and Charlie Reinertsen, and John Foss and Jack Dutton. Wight and Catania picked up where they left off last year just at one spot higher, when they compiled a 6-2 mark at second doubles. The other two pairings were playing their first matches together but also earned relatively straight-forward victories.
St. Olaf continued their strong play in sweeping the six singles matches. Wight and Reinertsen, playing first and third singles respectively, won tough first-set tiebreakers before winning easier second sets. Gunderson, Foss, and first-year Stephen Nolan won convincingly at the second, fourth and sixth positions. At fifth singles, Catania battled to a 6-3, 7-6(4) win over Kevin Schwandt of Concordia.
Coach Scott Nesbit credited part of the Oles strong performance to having scrimmaged the University of Minnesota's club team on Friday afternoon in Owatonna. He said the extra match play helped get his players sharper for the match against Concordia. The next match for St. Olaf is on Friday evening against Northwestern Bible College in Owatonna.
