OWATONNA, Minn.- After defeating Concordia-Moorhead in their first match of the spring, the St. Olaf men's tennis team continued to roll by topping Northwestern College 8-1 on Friday evening at Owatonna Tennis Center.
To start the match, the Oles swept the three doubles matches to get off to a 3-0 lead. The pairings of Andy Catania and John Wight and Knute Gundersen and Charlie Reinertsen each won their second straight matches to open the spring. Catania and Wight narrowly defeated David Knight and Caleb Kauss at first doubles 9-7, while Gundersen and Reinertsen topped Brandon Terpsma and Levi Busse 8-3 at third doubles. Jon Foss and Stephen Nolan won a competitive match at the second spot 8-5 against Collin Henslee and Philip Gudim.
In singles play, St. Olaf lost just one match to claim the 8-1 win. The lone defeat came at first singles, where Gundersen was defeated in three sets by Knight. Gundersen came back from dropping the first set to win the second but dropped the super tie-breaker 10-7. Elsewhere, St. Olaf picked up four straight-set wins and Foss only played a set, which he won 6-0, before his opponent, Jimmy Ekman, retired. Wight, Catania, Nolan, and Reinertsen each picked up the other victories for the Oles. The singles line-up was slightly reshuffled from the match against Concordia-Moorhead in order for Coach Scott Nesbit to get a look at different players at different positions.
St. Olaf improves their early season indoor record to 2-0, 1-0 in the MIAC. Northwestern falls to 1-3 overall. The next match for the Oles is on Friday when they take on Macalester in Owatonna at 6:30 pm.
