Women's tennis knocks off D-II MSU-Mankato

OWATONNA, Minn.- Faced with Division-II opposition, the St. Olaf women's tennis team responded and earned an 8-1 victory over MSU-Mankato on Saturday afternoon at Owatonna Tennis Center.

St. Olaf won all three of the doubles matches to get off to a 3-0 lead. Christine Muller and Caitlin Harper won their second straight match at first doubles, defeating Kathryn Gavin and Shealyn Bakke 9-8. The new combination of Kristi Kroker and Julia Ellis defeated Brandi Dohmen and Joey Bosch 8-4, while Andrea Jumes and Carrie Wight topped Laura May and Hailey Robb 8-5.

Singles play featured three matches that went to super tie-breakers. Ellis won her super breaker 10-0 after splitting the first two sets with Bosch at third singles. Sophomore Lizzy Eggert earned a win in her first match of the spring by defeating Robb 10-5 in a super breaker. The lone match the Oles dropped was at fourth singles, where first-year Kristi Kroker lost a very close match to Bakke. Kroker won the first set in a tie-break and lost the second 7-5 before dropping the ten point tiebreak 11-9.

Muller picked up a comfortable 6-2, 6-1 victory at first singles against Gavin. At second singles, Harper did not lose a game against Dohmen to pick up her first win of the spring. Erin Hynes was lead May 6-4, 5-5 when May was forced to retire.

St. Olaf is now 2-0 on the season and remains 1-0 in the MIAC. Minnesota State Mankato falls to 3-2 so far. St. Olaf's next match is on Saturday against St. Cloud State in Owatonna.
