February 18, 2012
NORTHFIELD, Minn. - St. Olaf scored five unanswered goals, including four in the decisive third period as the host Oles topped fourth-ranked Gustavus 5-2 on Saturday afternoon at Northfield Ice Arena.
The Oles (8-11-4, 8-6-2 MIAC) got goals from five different players in the comeback. Kristen Latta's goal at 8:48 of the final frame was the game-winner, on assists from Alex Meyer and Christina Benjamin. St. Olaf added an insurance goal minutes later when Kira Clunis tallied her seventh of the season on a feed from Caroline Ponessa. The final score came from Meyer, and empty net goal with four seconds left.
Gustavus (19-2-2, 14-1-1 MIAC) got off to a 2-0 lead on goals from Kelly Thotland and Lindsey Hjelm. The Oles then had a goal from Alison Umland -- at 18:54 of the second -- before Margot Fleming tied the game at 4:25 of the third.
Sam Ubl was the story in net. She made 42 saves, including 18 in the second to keep it close and 12 in the third.
The win over the Gusties moved the Oles into fourth place in the MIAC with one weekend left. St. Olaf plays a home-and-home series with St. Catherine University next weekend.
