Men's hockey loses lead, but saves tie with Gusties

ST. PETER, Minn. - The St. Olaf men's hockey team lost a 3-0 third period lead, but managed a 3-3 tie with host Gustavus in the regular season finale on Saturday night.
With the tie, St. Olaf will be the No. 4 seed in the upcoming MIAC playoffs, which begin next Friday when the Oles host the five seed, Hamline University at Northfield Ice Arena.
St. Olaf had a goal from Jack Nicoll at 5:14 of the second, then a pair from Britton Smith inside a 53-second span to take a 3-0 lead.
The game remained at 3-0 until Gustavus scored three times in the final 9:30 of regulation to force overtime. Adam Smyth, Ross Ring-Jarvi and Nate Paulsen scored for the Gusties in the stretch. Ring-Jarvi's goal came on the power play. Gustavus had a power play in the overtime session, but couldn't convert.
Ben Leis made 41 saves in the tie for St. Olaf, which was outshot by Gustavus 44-26.
