Ole women top St. Cloud State for second straight win against D-II opposition

OWATONNA, Minn.- The St. Olaf women's tennis team picked up their third straight win and second in a row against D-II teams, as they edged St. Cloud State University 5-4 on Saturday night at Owatonna Indoor Tennis Center.
St. Olaf won two of the three doubles matches and three of the six singles matches to earn the narrow win. First-year Kristi Kroker was the only Ole to win both her singles and doubles matches.
In doubles play, Christine Muller and Caitlin Harper lost a close 8-6 match to Cassandra Brown and Katie Kotscheva at first doubles. However, the pairings of Julia Ellis and Kroker and Lizzy Eggert and Andrea Jumes each won their matches to give the Oles a 2-1 advantage. Ellis and Kroker won 8-6 at second doubles, while Eggert and Jumes topped Hannah Kantor and Kayla Buckley 8-4.
St. Olaf needed to win gain at least a split of six singles matches to clinch the win. Picking up wins for the Oles were Harper, Kroker, and Erin Hynes. At first singles, Harper dropped the first set to Brown 6-1 but came back to win the second set at love. The senior then went on to win the super tie-breaker 10-7. Kroker defeated Tanya Halloran in two close sets 6-4, 7-5 at fourth singles. Kroker's fellow first-year Erin Hynes won her second straight match at fifth singles by defeating Kantor 6-3, 6-0. Muller and Caitlin Owsley each lost super tie-breakers at second and sixth singles. Julia Ellis suffered her first defeat of the year 6-3, 7-6 to Catarina Franca.
St. Olaf is now 3-0 on the year and has two MIAC matches this week, as they look to extend their unbeaten start to the year. The Oles face Macalester on Friday in Owatonna before traveling to the University of Minnesota's Baseline Tennis Center to face off with St. Cate's on Saturday afternoon. St. Cloud State falls to 3-7 on the season.
