Gusties start fast, hold off Ole men 4-2 in MIAC hockey title game

ST. PETER, Minn. - Gustavus Adolphus College scored the game's first three goals in the first period and held off the St. Olaf men's hockey team 4-2 in the MIAC Playoff championship game on Saturday night before an announced crowd of 1,391.

The host Gusties advance to the NCAA Division III Tournament with the victory. The Oles, who made their second appearance in the title game, finish the season at 13-9-4 overall.

St. Olaf rallied within a goal on back-to-back scores over the second and third periods. Charlie Raskob scored the Oles' first at 9:17, a powerplay tally, to make it 3-1. Kevin Harris then notched a rebound goal at 3:28 of the third period to make it 3-2.

Gustavus (16-6-5) then answered with a Gustav Bengston goal 59 seconds later to make it 4-2. Dane Erickson gave the Gusties two straight goals -- at 5:13 and 8:34 -- to open the game. Jack Walsh made it 3-0 with his score at 15:32.

St. Olaf held a sizable advantage in shots, 41-30, including a 33-13 edge over the final two periods. The Gusties' John McLean made 39 saves to get the win. He stopped a handful of shots on an Ole power play midway through the period after Gustavus' Ilya Kravtchouck took a five-minute boarding penalty.
