HILTON HEAD, S.C.- The St. Olaf men's tennis team continued their strong showing in Hilton Head by notching a 7-2 victory over Allegheny College on Thursday morning.
The win moves the Oles season record to 7-1, including a 3-1 mark in Hilton Head. Allegheny falls to 5-6 overall and has lost all four of their matches in Hilton Head. St. Olaf took five of the six singles matches, four in straight sets, and the top two doubles flights to secure the win.
In doubles, John Wight and Andy Catania continued their perfect start to the spring by defeating Patrick Cole and Kevin Kacer 8-3 for their sixth straight win. Also winning for the Oles was the team of Knute Gundersen and Stephen Nolan. The pair topped Alex Hurtuk and Sam Stephenson 8-4. The Gators claimed a single doubles point when sophomores Charlie Murphy and Frank Mosconi earned an 8-2 win over Charlie Reinertsen and Ryan Abdella. The doubles loss was just the fourth for any Ole pairing this spring.
The Oles were led in singles play by victories from Wight, Nolan, Catania, Reinertsen, and Jon Foss, with Reinertsen claiming the lone match tie-breaker of the bunch. Wight and Foss each lost just four games against their Gator opponents at second and sixth singles. Meanwhile, Nolan and Catania dropped one game a piece at third and fourth. Foss and Nolan notched their team-leading seventh wins of the spring. Reinertsen lost the first set against Murphy 6-4, before fighting back to claim the second set 6-1. Having lost his two prior match tie-breakers, Reinertsen came out on top this time 11-9. The lone Ole setback came at first singles where Patrick Cole topped Gundersen 6-2, 6-1 to continue his impressive start to the year. Cole has a 12-2 overall record, including an 8-1 mark in dual matches, and sits at 25-5 for his career.
St. Olaf wraps up their spring break trip on Friday morning against Centre College at 11:30 am. Centre is 1-6 so far and is 1-2 in Hilton Head.
