HILTON HEAD, S.C.- The St. Olaf men's tennis team completed their spring break trip to Hilton Head with a 4-1 record after they topped Centre College 7-2 on Friday morning.

The Oles (8-1, 2-0 MIAC) and the Colonels (2-7) opened the day with doubles and all three matches were close. St. Olaf came out with two points thanks to victories from Andy Catania and John Wight and Jon Foss and Jack Dutton. Catania and Wight topped Ben Newstadt and Lucas Kelley 8-5 at first doubles for their seventh straight win to start the year. Foss and Dutton needed a tie-breaker to defeat Woody Rini and Andrew Howard 9-8. The Ole duo won the tie-breaker 10-8 to improve to 4-0 this spring. The Colonels earned a point when Xan Witherington and Trey Williamson came from behind to beat Knute Gundersen and Stephen Nolan in a tie-breaker.

After the tight doubles matches, the Oles won five of the six singles matches to seal the win. Winning for the Oles were Gundersen, Nolan, Catania, Foss, and Charlie Reinertsen. At second singles, Gundersen won two tie-breakers to defeat Witherington 7-6(5), 7-6(2). Nolan won the first 19 points of his match against Rini on his way to a 6-1, 6-1 victory. Canatnia, Foss, and Reinertsen each picked up straight-set victories over their opponents at the fourth through sixth spots. Foss and Nolan completed the trip undefeated in singles play. The top singles match saw Centre's Ben Newstadt outlast St. Olaf's Wight in a match tie-breaker in the heat. The two split the first two sets, each winning one 6-2, before Newstadt claimed the breaker 10-5.

The Oles leave Hilton Head and return home on Saturday. The team's next match is March 31 when they travel to face Luther in Decorah. The Norse are 13-3 so far this year and they defeated the Oles 5-4 last year. Four of the six singles matches went to match tie-breaks.
