Eighth inning homers give Oles game one win, split with SMU

WINONA, Minn. - Haley Schreier and Natalie Mironov each hit eighth inning home runs to lift St. Olaf to a 7-6 extra inning win in game one of a MIAC softball doubleheader with Saint Mary's University on Tuesday. SMU won the second game 3-1.
Game One: St. Olaf 7, Saint Mary's 6 (8 Inn.) Schreier's homer came with one out and no one on while Mironov's was a two-run blast to give the Oles a 7-4 lead. SMU scored twice in the bottom of the inning, but St. Olaf pitcher Amy Prok induced a fly ball to end the threat and pick up the complete game victory.
The homers were the Oles second and third of the day. Maggie Scholer, who was 2-for-3 with two runs, hit one to open the team's three-run sixth inning.
Mironov was 2-for-4 with four RBIs and Kayla Gronli 3-for-4. SMU's Michelle Carne was 3-for-4 and Alex Raske 2-for-4 with a home run.
Game Two: Saint Mary's 3, St. Olaf 1 St. Olaf scored a run in the first inning on a two-out Gronli single, but SMU's Kayla Peterson kept the Oles quiet the rest of the afternoon in a 3-1 Cardinal victory.
Peterson scattered seven hits while striking out four and walking none in a complete game effort. Erin Stenseth was 3-for-3 and Raske 2-for-4 in the win.
Jess Wilson went 2-for-3 for the Oles in the loss.
With the split, SMU stayed a game ahead of St. Olaf for fourth place with eight games to play. St. Olaf returns to action on Thursday at Hamline University (4-24, 2-10 MIAC) before returning home for a Saturday doubleheader with Macalester College (16-13, 5-8 MIAC).
