Women's tennis team falls to Gusties

SAINT PETER, Minn.- In their second match in two days, the St. Olaf women's tennis team was defeated 9-0 by host Gustavus on Thursday afternoon, as the Gusties remained undefeated in the MIAC.
St. Olaf hung with Gustavus in doubles play, but the Gusties claimed all three matches and went on to win each of the singles matches in straight sets. Alex Erickson, Megan Gaard, Laurel Krebsbach, Megan Born, and Mary Roop each picked up singles and doubles wins for Gustavus.
In doubles play, Caitlin Harper and Christine Muller fell to Gaard and Krebsbach 8-5. Kristi Kroker and Julia Ellis were defeated by Born and Erickson by the same margin, while Caitlin Owsley and Lizzy Eggert battled Roop and Mahoney but lost 8-6. As a team, Gustavus has won 22 of their 24 doubles matches in the MIAC.
Likewise, Gustavus has lost just two of their 48 MIAC singles matches this year, as they added six more wins to their tally. Harper's eleven-match winning streak came to an end against Gaard, as Gaard won 6-3, 6-3 at second singles. Kroker forced a first set tie-breaker against Born at fourth singles but lost it seven points to four. Born then went on to take the second set 6-2. Erin Hynes returned to the singles line-up only to fall 6-3, 6-2 to Mallory Shellum. Erickson and Roop also picked up straight-set wins against Muller and Lizzie Carlson at first and sixth singles, respectively. Despite the six losses, St. Olaf still has won 42 of 60 MIAC singles matches this season.
Gustavus improves to 15-7, 8-0 in the MIAC, while St. Olaf falls to 10-3, 7-3 in the conference. The Oles remain third in the MIAC Playoff race, behind Carleton and Gustavus. St. Olaf will open the MIAC Playoffs on Friday, May 4th in St. Peter against St. Catherine, Concordia, or Saint Mary's. The Oles have beaten St. Catherine and Concordia this year, but lost to Saint Mary's last weekend.
